Zimbabwe: Presidential Hopeful Confronted With Clean Water Crisis
Elisabeth Valerio, the leader of the United Zimbabwe Alliance (UZA) party, spoke about the stark reality of service delivery plaguing the country on Monday, 14 August.
Valerio, UZA’s presidential candidate and the only woman contesting the Zimbabwe 2023 general elections, took to Facebook to talk about her campaign trail while highlighting the plight of accessing drinking water across the southern African nation.
“As I turned on the tap to brush my teeth, bits and pieces flew from the pipes as the slow trickle of water choked and spluttered. Turning the tap off, I resolved to use bottled water instead – but couldn’t stop thinking of everyone drinking from these faucets daily,” she explained.
Valerio resolved to hold local councillors accountable for finding solutions to water issues in their respective communities once she’s in office.
Zimbabwean citizens take to the polls next week Wednesday, 23 August, with the odds favouring current incumbent, President Emmerson Mnangagwa of the Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front, to win.
Political observers claim that Nelson Chamisa of the Citizens Coalition for Change is a viable challenger to Mnangagwa, but the voting will make the final call.
